Stéphanie Cadieux, East regional consultant, Elder Abuse Ontario

Summary:

Elder abuse is a serious and growing public health issue that remains hidden and grossly under-reported. Between 2-10% of older adults in Ontario are estimated to be victims of some form of mistreatment and the magnitude of the problem will only continue to increase as the population ages. Through their interactions with the older adults and families they support, service providers often witness potentially abusive situations but don’t know how to address them. It is therefore crucial that front-line workers, health care professionals and institutional staff equip themselves with the knowledge and tools necessary to intervene. By providing an overview of elder abuse and shedding some light on our role in supporting the vulnerable, participants will leave this session better able to detect, respond and report suspected cases of abuse.
